External Hard Drives Are Handy and Cheap

Monday, December 21st, 2009

External USB drives make a lot of sense for computer users not comfortable with upgrading their laptop or desktop internal drives and as a backup device. Photos, movie clips, music, pdf, and other image files take up vast amounts of storage space on your hard drive. One friend of mine’s daughter, a former Apple Store genius, has 1.5 Terabytes of online media stored.   (more…)

The Prius of Printers - Laser Printers

Tuesday, December 8th, 2009

That ink in your inkjet printer costs about 300 to 500 times the cost of gasoline, according to research by the American Consumer Institute.  So if there was technology that would let you save ink in the same way that a hybrid car saves gasoline, that can mean hundreds of dollars per year in reducing printing expenses.  While there is no hard and fast rule, (more…)

Sell High, Buy Low, Pocket $400 +

Monday, March 30th, 2009

I wonder how many Best Buy customers who bought big ticket items with no interest financing still have the product they purchased?  If you examine some of the on line sales sites, there are many almost new computers, tvs, etc., for sale for people who need to pay the rent or utilities.

In any event, since the beginning of the year, I sold my two laptops, a 17″ HP I bought new last June and a black Macbook from Black Friday 2006.  No they didn’t have deferred financing on them.  A new new laptop and a netbook were bought as replacements; most astoundingly, I managed to pocket over $400 at the same time.  (more…)

Wednesday, March 18th, 2009

When every penny counts, consider a factory refurbished electronic device the next time you need to replace your computer, hard drive, printer, TV, monitor, DVD player, car stereo or iPod.  The savings are considerable and often the warranty is the same as buying a new product.  Usually, after a new model appears, refurbished units begin to appear for sale in the usual online places (more…)

Apple Airport Extreme

Apple Airport Extreme

Your friends or your children’s friends come to your home with their iPod Touch, netbook, or laptop.  They request access to your wireless. Your router has WEP or WPA security enabled, to protect your file sharing enabled PCs behind the router within your home network.  But these are your family’s friends, so do you give them access?  But will they be your kids BFF or only this month? What to do? (more…)

Audit Automatic Software Licensing Fees

Monday, March 9th, 2009

Symantec, publisher of the incredibly popular Norton antivirus and antispyware products, with almost two-thirds of the retail market,  was kind enough to notify me after the fact that a $42.39 charge was posted to my credit card for an update to Norton Antivirus 2006, even though the license wasn’t set to expire for two weeks hence.  Problem was, I no longer owned the computer the license was for and (more…)

Newspapers are Still Relevant

Samsung LCD 933snI used to get as many as four daily newspapers.  With all the news that’s fit to broadcast available on our digital desktop, I currently subscribe to zero newspapers. However, if you’re planning to make a major purchase (more…)

Macbook: Upgrade to 320Gb HD for Under $45

Thursday, March 5th, 2009

I love my two year old black Macbook, but the original 80Gb hard drive was underwheming.  If you have a huge iTunes library and lots of photos, that 80Gb drive fills up fast. In fact, you have to wonder about the wisdom of  iPod classics with 120Gb drives and equipping the just released (more…)

If Not Now, When is the Best Time to Buy?

Wednesday, March 4th, 2009

I’ve watched prices on laptops and HDTVs like a hawk and want to share my observations with readers.  The long term trend is that prices will drop, particularly in this cathartic economy.  And early adopters will always pay more so they can enhance their coolness factor.

But history may not repeat itself (more…)
